Proprietor’s Board

The Proprietor’s Board at Whitby Collegiate is dedicated to the strategic oversight of the school, ensuring its long-term sustainability and growth.

The Proprietor’s Board is responsible for safeguarding the school's vision, mission, and values, providing governance and direction. It also oversees financial management, property, and resource allocation, ensuring that the school’s infrastructure and resources support its educational objectives.

  • John Fiso ONZM

    CHAIR

    John has extensive governance and management experience in education, health and economic development sectors. He has served as chairman of the Independent Tertiary Education Providers of NZ (ITENZ) and on the boards of Pacific Co-operation Foundation, Ako Aotearoa, Volleyball NZ, and the Pacific Business Trust.

    John was awarded the NZ Order of Merit for services to sport, education and the Pasifika community and was named Wellingtonian of the Year for services to education in 2016.

    John founded the NZ Institute of Sport, a three-tier education institute with foundation, vocational and graduate programmes. He is also the chairman of Pacific Health Plus, the only Pacific healthcare provider in Porirua, and is passionate about improving access to medical services, bringing greater accountability and positive change to an underperforming health sector.

  • Roger Moses CNZM

    Roger Moses is a prominent educational leader with a wealth of experience in New Zealand's education sector. With a career spanning over four decades, he has made significant contributions to the field. Roger is known for his role as the Principal of Wellington College, where he served for an impressive 21 years. During his tenure, he played a pivotal role in fostering academic excellence, promoting a positive school culture, and nurturing the holistic development of students. Roger's dedication to education extends beyond his time at Wellington College; he has been actively involved in various educational organizations, working to shape educational policies and practices in New Zealand.

    In addition to his extensive experience in education, Roger Moses is recognised for his commitment to fostering leadership skills and character development in young individuals. His passion for education and leadership aligns well with the mission of Whitby Collegiate, making him a valuable addition to the school's governance team. As a member of the Whitby Collegiate governance board, Roger Moses brings a wealth of knowledge and insights that will undoubtedly contribute to the continued growth and success of the institution, benefiting both students and the broader community.

  • Keith Taylor ONZM

    Keith has significant governance experience being one of New Zealand’s most senior directors, providing governance leadership for some of New Zealand’s largest private companies, public institutions and not-for-profits.

    Keith achieved significant academic credentials achieving national scholarships to place him as one of New Zealand’s top academic students, with degrees in Science, Mathematics and Economics and attendance at Stanford University Investment programme and Oxford University Advanced Management Programme.

    Keith has served 5 years as a director of the New Zealand Qualifications authority and 6 years as chair of Wellington College.

    He has recently been the deputy chair of the Reserve Bank and the chair of the Government Superannuation fund. He is a director of the Southern Cross Health Group and AMP Life (Australia). He also chairs Dwell social housing trust. Keith spent 15 years as the Tower Limited MD/CFO.

    Keith comes to Whitby Collegiate with a wealth of experience and expertise. He has a history of mentoring young people and has spent all of his professional life in Wellington.

  • Shelley Addison

    EXECUTIVE PRINCIPAL

    Initially from a secondary school background, Shelley was a Regional Sports Director at Sport Bay of Plenty before taking up the role of Deputy CE at the NZ Institute of Sport. Over the next 22 years, as part of the Fiso Group, she oversaw the growth of NZIS to a multi-campus, multi-level independent tertiary provider. She was the relationship manager with key compliance agencies such as NZQA and the Tertiary Education Commission, and oversaw collaborations with international tertiary providers.

    Shelley also comes with a strong pedigree in sport, having represented NZ in Volleyball for over a decade as the national team captain. She then went on to coach the senior women’s team for several years, was the Vice-President of Volleyball NZ and a team leader to the Atlanta Olympics. Shelley has been inducted as a life member of Volleyball NZ in recognition of her services to the sport.

  • Tony Hanning


    Tony has had a significant career in education as a teacher, principal and Director of Catholic Education for the Southland and Otago region. Tony has been instrumental in establishing new schools in the Southland Otago region, both primary and secondary and has overseen the rationalisation of Catholic schools when required. Tony’s 38-year tenure as Director of the Catholic Education office in Dunedin, and his distinguished contribution to education in general, was recognised with the conferring of a Papal Knighthood.

    Tony was responsible for St. Peter’s College (Gore), Verdon College (Invercargill), Kavanagh College (Dunedin), St Kevin’s College (Oamaru) and was responsible for rationalising and merging schools such as Teschemakers, St Thomases, St Philomena, St Dominic’s.

    Tony served as an international Director for Lions International, holding many national and international executive positions over 30 plus years. Tony was also the regional manager for Camp Quality South, supporting the families of children with life-threatening illnesses.

  • Api Fiso


    Api has over 35 years of leadership experience in both public and private sectors. As an Inspector in the NZ Police, he combated organized and transnational crime and served as a Criminal Intelligence Analyst and the National Bureau of Criminal Intelligence Manager. He also established and managed a new group at Immigration NZ focusing on border security.

    Api has chaired the Board of Directors for the New Zealand Institute of Sport for 14 years and served as Director of FIG. He has led various high-level interagency government committees, including the Pacific Island Directors Conference. He has a strong interest in the Pacific region, working on initiatives with Pacific governments and donor organisations, and is a member of the Executive Alumni for APCSS.

    Api is the Niue Government’s Strategic Adviser, leading projects including the construction of a new Parliament and a governance project for the Public Sector. He also represented New Zealand in Volleyball for 7 years and has held various roles in administration and coaching, including as Chairman of the Combined Services Volleyball and a member of the Volleyball New Zealand Executive Board.

Parents’ Advisory Board

The primary objectives of the Parents’ Advisory Board at Whitby Collegiate include overseeing operational management and supporting the Executive Principal and Senior Leadership Team.

The Parents’ Advisory Board is responsible for monitoring the school’s progress and achievement. Additionally, it collaborates with the Proprietor’s Board to shape and develop the school’s vision, ensuring alignment with strategic goals from the perspective of parents and the wider community.

  • Danielle Leslie

    CO-CHAIR

    Danielle Leslie lived in the Porirua area since 2000 untiI moving to Christchurch in 2023. She has been connected to the school since 2009 with both of her children attending Samuel Marsden Whitby and Whitby Collegiate. Danielle has an accounting background having worked as an accounting technician for Marlborough firm WK for 10 years, then since 2003 Danielle and her husband Andrew have been involved in the residential construction field. 

    Danielle has been a longstanding supporter of the school and was actively involved in the campaign to save the school in July 2019. She sees the school as a precious asset that is important, as it gives people the choice in the pathway for their children’s education.

  • Tim Green

    CO-CHAIR

    Tim has over 20 years’ experience advising and working with businesses to grow and improve performance in international markets. He is experienced in international business, leading change, and leading teams to high performance in New Zealand and across multiple global locations and cultures.

    Tim held a number of senior leadership roles with New Zealand Trade and Enterprise in Australia, China and New Zealand, and worked as a Management Consultant and Corporate Finance Advisor in Europe.

    His Board governance experience includes being a past member of the Export NZ Advisory Board, the NZ-US Business Council, the G2G Know-How Ltd Board (an NZTE subsidiary), and an Advisor to the Board of Silverstripe Ltd.

    Tim is now a full-time dad and husband, including home-schooling his son Charlie (attending Whitby Collegiate from 2025), and spending as much time as possible with Isla (Year 12 Whitby Collegiate), Sophie (Whitby Collegiate graduate Class of 2020) and wife Nadine.

    Having been involved in the original Parents’ Action Group when Samuel Marsden Whitby school was threatened with closure, he now Co-Chairs the Whitby Collegiate Foundation and the Parents’ Advisory Board.

  • Elizabeth Couchman

    Elizabeth and her husband, Bryan live with their three sons Oliver (Samuel Marsden Whitby, leaver 2015), Edward and Thomas (Samuel Marsden Whitby, leavers 2019) on the beautiful Kapiti Coast. Her sons all thrived in the fabulously caring Whitby environment with its high academic standards, strong values, nurturing staff and true sense of community.

    Elizabeth began her career as a teacher of foreign languages at secondary school level. More recently, she’s held a variety of roles in education throughout the Kapiti area, working with both children and teenagers with learning needs, physical health challenges and mental health issues. She is currently Assistant Principal at Waikanae Primary School, where she runs the Learning Support programmes, arranging support to help every student to reach their potential.

    Elizabeth is passionate about education and feels privileged to work in an area where we can help to grow great people. Strong values, excellence in academic, sporting and cultural endeavours, and promoting whanaungatanga, or a sense of belonging, are cornerstones of her educational philosophy.
