Student Innovation: Gabriel Anthony Wins at Samsung's Solve for Tomorrow

We are proud to announce that Year 8 student Gabriel Anthony from Whitby Collegiate took first place in the Year 7-10 category of the 2024 Samsung Solve for Tomorrow competition. Gabriel's innovative project, "Pill-Bot," an AI medication identifier for the visually impaired, was inspired by his grandmother’s experiences.

The competition, held in partnership with the Museum of Transport and Technology (MOTAT), encourages Kiwi students to use their creativity and STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) skills to improve their communities. Gabriel’s Pill-Bot identifies different medications using AI and verbally announces the pill’s name to prevent confusion—a vital tool for those with vision impairments.

Dr. Siouxsie Wiles, one of the expert judges, praised Gabriel’s thoughtful approach, saying, “Gabriel’s project is a great example of using STEAM to make a positive impact. His design was carefully refined through experimentation and consultation with stakeholders, making it not just innovative but deeply meaningful.”

Gabriel also had the opportunity to appear on the Breakfast show to discuss his project and share insights into his journey. His achievement highlights the creativity and problem-solving skills that Whitby Collegiate encourages in all its students, and we couldn’t be prouder.
