Mr Daniel Loorparg

Digital Technology, Design & Visual Communications

  • My journey begins with the extraordinary tale of my father, an Estonian who fled war-torn Europe around 1945 with his mother. Tragically, they had to leave his father behind, who was captured by the Russians and interned in the Gulag camps. Seeking a new beginning, they made their way to the beautiful shores of Aotearoa, New Zealand. My father’s adventures didn’t stop there; he joined the army and, during a secondment in Malaysia, met my mother. Together, they returned to New Zealand and began our family.

As for me, after completing an Honours Degree in Visual Communication and Design, I embarked on an exciting career as a freelance Motion Content Producer. Alongside that, I’ve been sharing my passion through teaching in both tertiary and secondary education, often alternating between these two fulfilling paths.

  • The 2008 recession was a turning point that inspired me to embrace teaching. As a creative professional, I realized I needed a secure avenue during uncertain times. Teaching became my way of giving back, especially since I was quite the wild card in my own school days—academics weren’t exactly my top priority! Now, with the wisdom of hindsight, I can see potential in others where it might not be immediately apparent.

  • Students are remarkably similar wherever you go; they tend to face the same challenges across different schools. However, Whitby Collegiate’s smaller size creates a unique environment. While it may limit the breadth of relationships, it fosters a close-knit community that brings a certain ease to the school atmosphere. This tight-knit setting often results in fewer serious conflicts and provides a safe haven for students who might struggle in larger schools.

  • One of my most memorable moments was during the Noho Marae visit. It was great to see the Year 10 students stepping out of their comfort zones in an unfamiliar environment beyond the classroom. Unfortunately, the trip took an unexpected twist when I broke my wrist in the gym, leading to three weeks off—during which I also caught COVID for the first time! It was quite an unforgettable experience.

  • I’m deeply passionate about socialising with my diverse circle of friends.

  • When I’m not teaching or creating content for my YouTube channel, I love playing music, indulging in creative projects, and exploring the wilderness while walking my dog!

  • Here’s a fun fact: I’m not Mr. Leota!

    1. Don’t sweat the small stuff — it all works out in the end.

    2. Learn to live with the insurmountable; some things are beyond your control, and that’s okay.

    3. Embrace what you love and pursue it with all your heart.
